Explaining appleofhzi

It is simple! It is pronounced Apple-of-his-Eye.

Well, in the Bible (hang in there - this isn't a sermon) "apple of his eye" is mentioned a few times. To me it's a reminder of where my focus should be and what and who I am in God's eye. I heard the verse in a Bible study when I was a teenager and it has stuck with me. You can read for yourself:  Deuteronomy 32:10 ,  Psalm 17:8, Proverbs 7:2,  and Zechariah 2:8. If you want to know more, message me (even if you don't want to book me) and I'd love to talk more about it.

why appleofhzi

I wanted a professional and unique name to start out my photography business. I was torn between using a variation of my real name or a moniker. While I certainly liked the ease and sound of using my own name I quickly found out just how popular my first name (Jessica), even more common middle (starts with an L) and my last name is with other businesses and mainly photographers. It became an easy choice to go with Appleofhzi; which I had come up with many years ago. It's a reminder to me of one of my favorite verses from the Bible.

What kind of photographer?

My work can be described as: natural, emotive, real, and candid. I blend traditional posing with lifestyle photography. I use natural light and my camera, so no lights, flashes or props.

My desire for our photo session is to photograph you and your family and capture organic moments that are really happening so that you and your loved ones will treasure for a lifetime.

Where will the session be?

I'm a natural light and location photographer. I've dabbled with flash photography but was never happy with the end product, it just isn't my artistic style.

Once your session is booked we will find a place together to capture you and your family. It could be in your home, yard, park, etc.

What time of day?

My favorite time to shoot is during "the golden hour(s)." We are blessed with two golden hours during the day and the first is during the hour after sunrise and the last the hour before sunset. That doesn't mean that is the only time of day we can shoot but those are the ideal times.

What to Wear

  1. Coordinate the color palette in complementary colors and patterns. Color coordinating, not matching, gives depth to the photos. There are tons of wardrobe color palettes on Pinterest if you're struggling. My favorite options are earth tones and or neutral colors  but if you want to go in all pastels, go for it!
  2. Think comfort and something you'd like to wear not just to a photo shoot. I remember the gritted teeth smiles thanks to itchy dresses and tights smiles. You don't want those type of smiles! If you like dresses, where it. If your husband can't stand long-sleeved shirts, don't have him wear one. If your children don't like button up shirts, avoid those. If your child only likes one type of shoe (been there), wear those. We want comfort so we can get those relaxed and organic moments.
  3. Just say no to neon, florescent and graphics. The neon colors will reflect back on your child's skin and no amount of editing will fix that. My kids have tons of those sport shirts, you know which ones, and they are kindly asked to choose something else when I grab my camera. Graphics... they go out of style, can look awkward and be really bad if they have reflective material on them.
  4. Make sure the clothes fit and are in good condition, no stains, tears or holes. I'm all about buying clothes a size (or two) too big so they can grow into them and save some money.  For the photo session you don't want clothes that are cutting into the skin or hanging off their shoulders.
  5. Layers and accessories. Layers can give you options and be practical. As the sun dips we will lose warmth which means little ones may start to get chilly. Accessories are fun and can spruce up any outfit.
  6. Do NOT feel the need to go buy a new outfit for everyone unless you need or want to. Go look at Pinterest (or my Pinterest for ideas) and see what others have done and get some inspiration. Sometimes just pairing things differently, adding an accessory or splurging on a new wardrobe piece  is all you need but do whatever makes YOU feel comfortable.
  7. Mom, focus on you first this time! Pick your outfit first. Pick what you feel comfortable and beautiful in and go from there.
  8. Don't forget that you can ask me for help and or ideas.
